It is important to think about how you will validate and verify your driving question. Think about what sort of qualitative data do you foresee yourself gathering? Quantitative? How do you think a specific set of data or information will benefit your action research study?
My driving question is : How can we actively engage students in the assessment process and use that data to inform lesson design and student monitoring?Because my question looks at both students and teachers I think I will need data from both. My main goal started as trying to engage students in the assessment process and the idea of "choice and voice." I want to know what types of assessments students find most engaging--academically, emotionally, socially...I will need to do this with a questionnaire/survey to see where students are in this process. I also want to know from teachers how they feel about the assessment process and what they feel gives them the most "bang for their buck." Are teachers using exit slips? Observations? Taking into account the work that is being done along the way...? I am fortunate to have access to the teachers at my site as well as my community of Academic Specialists to draw on for expertise. The more I read the more strongly I feel about assessment not being a snapshot on a given day, but a spectrum of all the work completed and the learning process.
